RMNP

Last weekend Keith and I began the long holiday weekend with a bike ride up to Jamestown. From our house the total mileage there and back is 40 miles which was my longest ride to date. On the 4th of July there is a pancake feed that benefits the local Volunteer Fire Department and attracts a lot of local cyclists. The event is held in the town park and in addition to breakfast features bluegrass bands and a parade. It was a really fun way to spend the morning. That night we went to bed with the intention of waking up aroud 2:30am and climbing the North Ridge of Spearhead in RMNP. We began the 6 mile hike in around 4 in the morning and were making good time until my knee started giving me some trouble. By the time we got to the base of the climb my knee was swollen and I was holding back tears. I was beyond disapointed in both not being able to climb and at the fact that after 4 months my knee still gives me issue at times. We hung out for a while, ate some food, took a nap in an alpine meadow and then made our way back to the trailhead. I decided that I think my knee would do much better if we hiked up one day, bivyed at the base, and then climbed first thing in the morning so that is exactly what we've decided to do. We were able to snag a permit for a bivy on our way out of the park so we'll be heading back in a few weeks for "climb the N Ridge of Spearhead" Part 2.
